What Is Swap Arcade?

Swap Arcade is a full-size home arcade machine that transforms in seconds into a compact furniture cabinet.

Open it up and it stands about six feet tall, with a 27-inch display, two-player SANWA arcade controls, built-in speakers, retro gaming and support for additional gaming systems. When you're finished playing, it transforms into a cabinet roughly half its height that looks like a normal piece of furniture.

It is part transforming arcade cabinet, part multicade, and part solution to a very practical problem: not everyone who wants a real arcade in their home wants a giant arcade machine taking over the room 24 hours a day.

The Idea: Arcades Meet Transformers

When inventor and entrepreneur Les Cookson first had the idea for Swap Arcade, it combined a couple of things he had loved since growing up in the 1980s: arcade and console games—and Transformers.

The idea of taking two completely different things and designing a mechanism that could convincingly transform between them was just cool.

But as an adult, there was also a practical reason for it.

A home arcade is awesome when you're playing it with your kids, having friends over, or spending an evening playing classic games. But when you're not using it, a brightly colored six-foot arcade cabinet still occupies the same part of your living room.

And not everyone has a dedicated game room.

Living spaces are shared. Hobbies involve trade-offs. Sometimes you want the arcade out, and sometimes you want the room back.

So why couldn't an arcade work more like any other piece of recreational equipment? Pull it out when you want it. Put it away when you're finished.

Building a Transforming Arcade That Actually Looks Like an Arcade

Cookson started designing and building prototypes.

As he researched what was already available, he found mostly DIY builds that attempted to conceal gaming equipment inside furniture, wall units, desks or cabinets. But there was an important difference.

None of them really became a traditional full-size arcade.

They might hide a screen and controls inside a cabinet, but when opened they still looked like a screen and controls awkwardly emerging from a piece of furniture.

Cookson wanted Swap Arcade to go much further.

When it's an arcade, it should actually look and feel like an arcade—full height, colorful graphics, marquee, two-player controls and the presence of a traditional upright arcade machine.

Then, when you're finished, all of that should disappear.

That became Swap Arcade.

Then the Internet Found It

As the Kickstarter launch approached, Cookson began posting videos of the prototype on Instagram and other social platforms.

The day before the Kickstarter campaign launched, one of those transformation videos took off.

Within days it had been viewed millions of times.

People watched this giant retro arcade fold down into an unassuming little furniture cabinet—and they had opinions.

Lots of opinions.

But there were two other reactions that appeared over and over.

In a strange way, those completely opposite reactions helped explain why the video spread so far.

Even people who didn't want a Swap Arcade seemed to need to say something about it.

Technically, the cabinet is holding quite a lot—it holds a six-foot-tall arcade and all of its accessories. But if what you really need is maximum storage for bath towels, there are plenty of excellent cabinets at IKEA.

And if you have a dedicated game room or want a giant arcade proudly displayed in the middle of your living space every minute of every day, that's great too. You may not have the problem Swap Arcade was designed to solve.

But apparently there are a lot of people somewhere in between.

More Than $226,000 Says There Might Be a Market

On May 12, 2026, Swap Arcade officially launched on Kickstarter.

Thirty days later, the campaign had raised $226,573 from 170 backers against an original $15,000 funding goal. Kickstarter also selected Swap Arcade as a Project We Love.

The viral video certainly helped, but attention came from well beyond social media.

Swap Arcade was covered by publications including The Verge, New Atlas, Hackster, Retro Dodo, StartupSelfie and Supercar Blondie Tech with writers focusing on the same unusual combination: a full-size arcade experience that could disappear into ordinary furniture when it wasn't being used.

That response helped validate something important.

People didn't just think a transforming arcade was fun to watch.

Some people had been waiting for exactly this kind of space-saving home arcade.

Why Would You Want to Hide an Arcade?

This became one of the most interesting questions surrounding the project.

The answer is simple: because sometimes you're not playing it.

It isn't about being embarrassed to own an arcade.

It's about having hobbies while also sharing a home with other people.

Maybe you want a full-size arcade when friends come over on Friday night, but you don't necessarily want it dominating the living room on Monday morning.

Maybe you live in an apartment, condo or smaller house where dedicating a permanent room to an arcade cabinet isn't practical.

Maybe you love arcades but your spouse doesn't want one becoming the focal point of the house.

Or maybe you simply like putting things away when you're finished using them.

There is another benefit too: when Swap Arcade is closed, the screen and controls are protected. If guests are coming over—or perhaps some particularly enthusiastic nieces and nephews—you can close the machine and suddenly there isn't an arcade begging to be climbed on or played with.

It's Also a Serious Multicade

The transformation gets most of the attention, but Swap Arcade isn't just a clever piece of transforming furniture.

It's designed to be a flexible multicade gaming system.

The standard system comes with a retro gaming setup that makes it easy to load and play your own classic arcade and console games of your choice, with support for thousands of compatible titles across many different systems.

The standard configuration includes a Raspberry Pi 4, while a more powerful Intel N100 Mini PC configuration is also available for people interested in expanded emulation performance and more advanced systems.

Swap Arcade also isn't limited to the built-in retro gaming system.

Its arcade controls and HDMI display can be used with supported external hardware including Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PC. A PC can also open the door to arcade-style games through platforms such as Steam.

So the idea isn't to build another arcade cabinet that's locked into one game—or even one generation of games.

It's a home arcade that can change along with the person who owns it.

Maybe This Is the Future of the Home Arcade

Traditional arcade machines are wonderful.

Swap Arcade isn't trying to replace the experience of collecting original cabinets or building a dedicated home arcade room.

It's for everyone else.

It's for someone who grew up playing arcade games and still wants that experience, but now has a family, furniture, limited space and other people who also have opinions about what goes in the living room.

It’s for someone who wants retro arcade games one night, Nintendo Switch the next, PC games after that—and then wants to fold the entire arcade away and have the room back the following night.

And it's for someone who looks at a six-foot arcade transforming into an innocent-looking cabinet in a matter of seconds and simply thinks:

The Kickstarter campaign proved there are quite a few of those people.

And now Swap Arcade is moving from an idea, to a viral prototype, to a real product.
